38 Biblical Character Traits Every Christian Is To Have
(fruit of the Spirit) - part 2
by Pastor Shane Montgomery

How They Are Possible:
Salvation: Matthew 7:17-20, Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Word of God: Psalms 1:2-3, But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Local Church: Psalms 92:13, Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.
Spirit of God: Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Abiding in Christ: John 15:1-5, I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Chastisement (Purging): Hebrews 12:11, Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

The Traits:
21) liberality/generosity

New Testament Examples:

Disciples at Antioch:
- Ac 11:29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

Churches of Macedonia
- 2Co 8:2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

Corinthians:
- II Co 9:13, Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;

It is a command:
- Pr 25:21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
- Mt 5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
- Ro 12:13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
- Ep 4:28, Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
- 1Ti 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
- I Jn 3:17, But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Biblical Principle: Give and God will return more
- Pr 11:24, There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
- Pr 11:25, The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
- Pr 13:7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
- Pr 22:9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
- Pr 28:27, He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
- Lu 6:38, Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
- 2Co 9:6, But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
- 2Co 9:7-8 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

It is a blessing to give:
- Ac 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Must Be in Love:
- 1Co 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

22) longsuffering/patience/forbearance

Longsuffering is a fruit of the Spirit:

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
- also translated patience

We're commanded to have longsuffering and patience:
- 1 Corinthians 13:4, Charity suffereth long
- Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
- 1 Thessalonians 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
- 2 Timothy 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient
- Hebrews 12:1, Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us
- James 5:8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh

We're to be forbearing of each other:
- 1Co 13:7 Beareth all things,
- Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
- Col 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

We're to have patience in trials (that is how patience is developed):
- Romans 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
- Romans 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
- James 1:3-4, Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing
- James 5:10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

23) love/charity

God is the source of true love (and our example):
- Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
- Ga 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love
- Ep 2:4, But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
- I John 4:7-11, Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Love is an evidence of salvation:
- 1 John 3:14, We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
- 1 John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
- 1 John 5:1, Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

Jesus' new commandment (love one another as He loved):
- John 13:34-35, A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
- John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
- 1 John 3:23, And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
- 1 John 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Love is the fulfilment of the law:
- Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
- Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies

Love is action:
- 1 John 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Love never fails:
- Proverbs 17:17, A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
- I Co 13:4-7, Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
- 1Co 13:8, Charity never faileth

Love is to be without deceit or fear:
- Romans 12:9 Let love be without dissimulation
- 1 Timothy 1:5, Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
- 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Love leads to putting others first and service of others:
- Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
- Galatians 5:13, For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
- 1 Thessalonians 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
- Hebrews 6:10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
- 1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Love motivates sacrifice:
- Jn 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son
- John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
- 1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Love covers sins:
- Pr 10:12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
- Proverbs 17:9, He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends
- 1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

Love should be in the marriage (keeps it good):
- Proverbs 15:17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
- Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
- Ephesians 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
- Titus 2:4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

Love includes chastening:
- Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
- Re 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
- Proverbs 13:24, He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

24) meekness

- an inwrought grace of the would, a temper of spirit in which we accept God's dealings with us as good, therefore without disputing or resisting

- opposite of self-interest and self-assertiveness

Jesus is our example:
- Mt 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
- 2Co 10:1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:

Moses and example of:
- Nu 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

Available through Spirit-filling:
- Ga 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness

Commanded:
- Ep 4:1-2, I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness
- Eph 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
- Col 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
- Ti 3:2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Should govern how we approach fallen Christians:
- Ga 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Should govern how we interact with the lost:
- II Ti 2:24-25, And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
- 1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Should govern how we accept the Word:
- Jas 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Should govern how we share our wisdom:
- Jas 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

Wives to have (part of submission):
- 1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

25) obedience/submission/subjection

- the shortest distance between you and the life you want is total obedience to Christ

Rebellion is as witchcraft and vexes the holy Spirit:
- 1Sa 15:22-23, "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry."
- Isa 63:10, "But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

Jesus expects obedience:
- Lu 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
- 1Co 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
- Heb 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
- Jas 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
- Jas 4:7, Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Obedience reveals that we are saved:
- Tit 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
- I Jn 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

Obedience reveals our love for the Lord:
- Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
- Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
- Joh 14:23-24, Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

Obedience determines friendship with Jesus:
- Joh 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Obedience leads to blessings and answered prayer:
- Jas 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful
hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
- 1Jo 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

26) peace

God is the author of peace:
- 1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly
- 2Th 3:16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

Peace with God is through salvation:
- Ro 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
- Eph 2:14-15, For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
- Col 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Peace of God comes from God as we trust in Him:
- Isa 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
- Php 4:6-7, Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Peace is available through the Holy Spirit:
- Ga 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace

Peace comes from Jesus Christ (therefore we should not fear):
- Joh 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
- Joh 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Peace comes through obedience:
- Ro 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Peace comes through loving the Word:
- Ps 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

If we have the peace of God, we will have peace with others:
- 1Co 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
- Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Peace with others is a command:
- Ro 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
- 1Ti 2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
- He 12:14 Follow peace with all men
- 1Pe 3:11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

Lack of peace with others is a sign of carnality:
- 1Co 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
- Jas 3:16-17, For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

27) prayerfulness

- Jesus Christ was a man of prayer, Lu 6:12

- Great Missionaries/Evangelists of the past saw God's blessings/revival through prayer

(Hudson, Brainerd, Studd, etc.)

- "no man is greater than his prayer life", Leonard Ravenhill

- "a sinning man will stop praying, a praying man will stop sinning", L Ravenhill

- "all our failures are prayer failures", John R. Rice

We're commanded to pray:
- I Chr 16:11, continually
- Ps 55:17, evening, morning, noon
- Lk 18:1, always
- I Thes 5:17, without ceasing
- I Tim 2:8, everywhere

How We're to pray:
- Thankfully Phil 4:6; Col 4:2
- Specifically Jas 4:2 Without repetitions Mt 6:7
- Privately Mt 6:6
- Obediently I Jn 3:22; Prov 15:8, 29; I Pet 3:12;
- Jas 5:16 Delighting in Him Ps 37:4
- In faith Mt 21:22; Heb 11:6; Jas 1:6-7; Mt 7:7-11;
- Mk 11:23-24; 9:23; I Tim 2:8 (claiming promises)
- In Jesus' name Jn 14:13-14; 15:16; 16:23-26
- According to His will I Jn 5:14
- Abiding in Him Jn 15:7 In the Spirit Eph 6:18

What Prayer Can Do For Us:
- Keep us cleansed of sin I Jn 1:9; Ps 66:18
- Give deliverance from temptation Mt 6:13; 26:41
- Strengthen our faith Mt 7:7; Heb 11:6
- Make us more like Christ Jn 15:7 Give power
- Make God more Lord of our lives by daily consulting him about decisions Jas 1:5; Rom 12:1-2
- Avoid worry Phil 4:6-7; Mt 11:28
- Give grace to help in time of need Heb 4:16
- Give joy Ps 16:11

Hindrances to Answered Prayer:
1. Unconfessed Sin Ps 66:18; Prov 28:13; I Jn 1:9
2. Unforgiveness/Unrighted wrongs Mt 5:23-24; Mk 11:25
3. Covetousness/Selfishness (idols) Mal 3:9; Jas 4:3; I Jn 5:14
4. Rebellion to the Word (sin) Prov 15:8; Is 59:1-2; I Jn 3:22
5. Indifference to the Bible Prov 28:9
6. Wrong Husband/Wife relationship I Pet 3:7
7. Unbelieving Jas 1:6-7; Heb 11:6; Mt 21:22

Prayerlessness is a sin:
- I Sa 12:23, "God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray"
- Jas 4:2, "ye have not, because ye ask not"
1) it is disobedience, I Th 5:17; Lu 18:1
2) proves our laziness, Mt 26:40-41
- Neglect corporate prayer (prayer meeting, most important service)
- Ac 1:14; 12:5,12
3) neglect of prayer leads to sin, Mt 26:41
4) shows a lack of enjoyment of the Lord, Mt 15:8
5) proves our unbelief, Mt 7:7; He 11:6 (diligently)

We reap what we sow - little prayer, few answers and blessings

Suggestions:
1) confess your prayerlessness as a sin to God
2) give God some time every morning
3) attend the church prayer meeting service to pray one for another
4) pray about each thing as it comes up, don't save it
5) pray through every burden until it is resolved, don't stop

28) purity/chastity

- I Ti 5:22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

- 1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Purity is a command:
- II Co 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
- I Th 4:7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
- I Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Sexual purity is a must:
"sexual purity, like a great fortress, builds a wall of protection around both body and soul"
- Mt 5:28, But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
- Pr 6:25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
- Job 31:1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

We must keep a pure mind:
- "we become what we think about", Pr 23:7 "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he"
- Ro 8:6-7, For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
- Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
- Ti 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

29) receptivity to the Word

The contrast:
- Pr 10:17, He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.
- Pr 29:1, He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

The key passage (acknowledge what is in the mirror):
- Jas 1:21-25, Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
- Pr 15:32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.
- 1Th 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
- He 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
- 1Pe 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

30) reverence

- how often have you trifled before God as you would not have in the presence of the Queen?

God's person demands reverence:
- Ex 3:5, the place thou standest is holy ground
- Ps 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
- Ps 89:7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
- Ps 111:9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

We should approach prayer with reverence:
- Ps 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
- Mt 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

We should serve with reverence:
- Ps 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
- Heb 12:28-29, Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.

31) servant-heartedness - we were created by God to serve each other

God's greatest compliment:
- Nu 12:7 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.

Jesus our example:
- Php 2:5-7, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

A sign of greatness in God's eyes:
- Mt 20:26-28, But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
- Mt 23:11, But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

Will be rewarded as servants:
- Mt 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
- Joh 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

We are to serve all:
- 1Co 9:19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
- Ga 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

32) soberness (serious-minded)

1Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
Tit 2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
Tit 2:4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
Tit 2:6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
Tit 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Satan's existence requires soberness:
-1 Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

We must guard our minds and prayer life:
- 1Pe 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
- 1Pe 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

Contrast:
- Eph 5:3-4, filthiness, foolish talking, and jesting
- 1Th 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

33) temperance/self-control

Ga 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1Co 9:25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

II Pe 1:5-8, And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Flesh under control: (ie. fasting reveals that we are in control of our flesh, Mt 6:16-18)
- feelings must follow facts and faith, not lead them
- truth is true, no matter what you think or feel

Ro 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Ro 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1Co 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Ga 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Ga 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

1Pe 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

Appetites under control (including selfish desires):
- Pr 25:16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
- Lu 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
- surfeiting means "excessiveness"
- 1Th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Temper under control:
- can tell a lot about Christianity based on how act during sports
- Pr 14:29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding
- Pr 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
- Pr 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
- I Co 13:4-5, Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
- Jas 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

Tongue under control:
- positive tongue, quietness vs. criticism, slander, talkativeness
- Ps 34:13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
- Pr 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
- Pr 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
- Pr 15:23 A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!
- Pr 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
- Pr 29:11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
- Jas 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
- Jas 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
- 1Pe 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

34) thankfulness

Ps 92:1 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:

Ps 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Ps 119:62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

It Brings Glory To God:
Ps 50:23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.

For All Things
- Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
- 1Th 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

All The Time
- Col 2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
- Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
- Heb 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Should Be Part of Our Prayer Life
- Php 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
- Col 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Should Affect Our Behaviour
- Lu 7:36-47, the woman was so thankful she did not care what people thought, she only wanted to do something for Jesus

35) unselfishness

- stewards own nothing but manage the possessions and affairs of others

God Owns Everything:
- I Chr 29:14, But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

We're Not To Please Ourselves First, But Put God First:
- Mt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

We're To Be Content With What We Have:
- I Ti 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
- He 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

We're Not To Please Ourselves First, But Put Others First:
- Ro 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
- Ro 15:1-3, We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
- 1Co 10:24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
- 1Co 10:33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
- 1Co 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
- Php 2:3-4, Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
- 1Ti 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
- 1Jo 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

36) watchfulness/vigilance

Watch for His Coming:
- Mt 24:42, Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
- Mt 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
- Mr 13:35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
- Mr 13:37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

Watch for temptation:
- Mt 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
- 1Co 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
- 1Th 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
- He 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Watch for the Devil:
- I Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Watch in Prayer:
- Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
- Col 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
- 1Pe 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

37) wisdom/knowledge/understanding

- Pr 1:1-7 intro, why Proverbs written (instruction, knowledge, wisdom, understanding)

We're Commanded to Get Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding:
- Pr 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
- Pr 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
- Pr 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
- Pr 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
- Pr 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen
than silver!
- Col 1:9-10 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
- 2Pe 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
- 2Pe 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2Pe 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The Wisdom of Man (Our Own Wisdom) Is Not God's Wisdom:
- Pr 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
- Pr 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
- Pr 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
- Pr 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
- Pr 26:12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
- Ro 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
- 1Co 3:18-19, Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
- 1Co 8:2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

Learning Does Not Guarantee True Knowledge:
- 2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

True Wisdom Only Comes From God Through Jesus Christ:
- Pr 2:3-7, Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
- Pr 21:30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.
- 1Co 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
- 1Co 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
- Col 2:3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- Jas 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Satan Opposes God's Wisdom:
- 2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

The Word Gives Wisdom:
- I Co 2:13-14, Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
- 2Ti 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
- He 5:14, But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Wisdom Can Only Be Found As We Fear the LORD:
- Job 28:28, And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
- Pr 1:29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
- Pr 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom

God's Wisdom Can Come As We Listen To Wise People:
- Pr 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

To Get Wisdom, We Must Always Be Learning:
- Pr 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser

We Must Be Humble and In Control to Get Wisdom:
- Pr 11:2, with the lowly is wisdom.
- Pr 14:29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding
- I Co 8:1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

We Can Only Learn Wisdom As We Yield To Reproof:
- Pr 17:10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
- Pr 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Wisdom Should Affect Our Behaviour:
- Pr 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
- Ep 5:15-16, See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
- Col 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
- Jas 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

One With Wisdom Spares His Words:
- Pr 17:27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
- Pr 17:28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
- Pr 18:7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
- Pr 29:11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

38) zeal/fervour/earnestness

Zeal is commanded by God:
- Romans 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
- Galatians 4:18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
- 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
- Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

(the contrast is in Rev 3:15-16)

Phinehas an example of zeal (rewarded by God):
- Numbers 25:11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
- Numbers 25:13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

We are to serve the Lord with all our might:
- Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
-Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

God's Word should give us zeal:
- Jeremiah 20:9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

The condition of the lost should give us zeal:
- Acts 17:16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

We're to be zealous of good works:
- Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

We're to earnestly contend for the faith:
- Jude 1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Our zeal will affect others in a good way:
- 2 Corinthians 9:2 For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many.
- Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
