The Bible states in I John 5:11, “And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life...” The viewpoints people have toward death or “life after death” are very interesting and certainly diverse. Some people are very afraid of death. Others, conversely, seem to have a very casual attitude about dying. Some expect to go to heaven. Others think that when the body dies there is no afterlife of any kind—good or bad. Yet, God’s Word has plainly declared that there is an existence after physical death and that we can know that we have eternal life, even before we die.
In the book of Genesis, we read how God created all things. He made a perfect earth and the first two people, Adam and Eve. However, these first two people disobeyed God, and at that point both sin and death were passed upon both Adam and Eve and all their offspring. It is thus in a sinful condition that each person is born into this world. Our sin separates us from a holy God. Romans 6:23 says that the wages of our sin is death. Sin brings both physical death and eternal judgment. Yet, God in His love provided a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him. God’s Son, Jesus, came from heaven, was supernaturally conceived in the womb of Mary, and was born into our world. He lived a sinless life, was falsely accused of the Jews, and sentenced to die a death of crucifixion. Yet, God’s Word tells us that this death was a fulfillment of God’s plan for the saving of mankind. Jesus died for all mankind and paid for all of our sins. After He died, He was buried, and then He rose from the dead on the third day, proving to be the Son of God by His resurrection.
It is through faith in Jesus that you and I can have our sins forgiven and be given the gift of eternal life. We cannot earn eternal life by living a certain way or doing certain things. It is through faith in Jesus Christ that we are saved. Ephesians 2:8-9 says "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Galatians 2:21 points out that if righteousness could be achieved by keeping the law, then Jesus died in vain.
If you have never believed on Jesus and received Him by faith to save your soul, I encourage you to do so. Some people sincerely trust in their baptism, their church membership, their honest living, their sincerity in a particular religion, or their general knowledge of God as a way of salvation. Proverbs 14:12 warns: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." To complete the passage from above, I John 5:11-12 says, “And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” If you have any questions about this most important matter, please let us know so we may help you to know for sure that you have eternal life.
